Wednesday (10/12) - Krems, Austria

I finally slept well on Tuesday night - yay!

We woke up Wednesday and had breakfast, then bundled up and headed to the deck. We sailed for roughly 90 min through the Wachau Valley and George (the Program Director) provided commentary from the bridge. It. Was. Cold. The temp was probably 50*, but there was a stiff headwind that was brutal. All 8 of our group were outside at one point, but most lasted less than 10 min. Jeff was smart and we packed our rain pants and both put them on. I had on a wool sweater, down jacket, rain jacket /windbreaker, cashmere scarf, hat, and gloves. And a blanket from the deck on my lap. Brrr! We did have a clear day and were able to see a lot! At one point they served a shot of apricot schnapps to everyone to warm up.

We arrived in Krems around 11am and disembarked at 11:30 for the Goettweig Abbey. Viking apparently has exclusive rights to bring river tour groups there, though we saw other individuals  visiting as well. The Abbey is known for its apricot products and wine. We got a tour of the Abbey and some time to explore on our own. They currently have 12 monks in residence , the other 30 are in the local parishes.

After exploring we tasted 3 of their wines. I bought a jar of apriocot preserves and Jeff a bottle of their apricot wine.

We had a late lunch after arriving back at the ship. I had a tasty Cuban sandwich. We had a little down time and sat up on deck and called Abby (we talked to Lauren the night before) - she wasn’t super chatty, but we heard about her and Carol’s plans for their day together. When we said goodbye she burst into tears (which made me tear up).

At https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1FcXvhEsGwvXENmQD91OCYHgBy3o2YDeR4pm we hopped back on a bus to visit the Moerwald winery. Our tour guide was from the States but she has lived in Austria for 30 years. You could tell she was a native English speaker, though. Her name was Trinka and she was quite entertaining. She told us a lot about Erhart, the vintner, on the 20 min drive to his winery. He farms 65 acres and has another 65 that someone else manages, but delivers the grapes to him for processing. He makes all the house wine for all Viking ships in the Wachau Valley - 250k bottles per year. And his winery isn’t that big! He was absolutely delightful. During the tour he spoke in German and Trinka translated. When we got to the tasting room he spoke a bit of English. Then, as Trinka forewarned, he often ran out of English words and started speaking in German and she would translate. He talked about his wines (we tried 6), joked about what holding your wine glasses in different ways meant, and also broke out some schnapps for us. He personally rang up every purchase in the gift shop (we bought 3 bottles of wine and some “Christmas in a bottle”). Very enjoyable excursion.

We got back as they started dinner service - it was Taste of Austria night - the wait staff were dressed in red and white checked shirts and served beer at the door. They had a few kinds of sausages, sauerkraut, and mac and cheese. We turned in right after dinner - long day!

Travel day

Monday.  We really lucked out on weather the first 6 days. The last 3 were definitely not great for the pools. Today was sunny again and it’s amazing how much warmer it felt while we were walking around.  We got up and packed and headed out before 9 to try to catch a feeding. Never saw a feeding but wandered through the aquariums again. Breakfast at Shake Shack. Up over the rope bridge again.  Got our luggage and checked out at 11 and caught our shuttle to the airport. The ride to the hotel seemed to be on major roads, but the ride back to the airport seemed to take us through a ton of small rundown streets. We did go past the US Embassy and a few hospitals as well.  The line for TSA was long but went pretty fast and we cleared customs quickly. I got a Starbucks (coffee for me, pastries for the girls) and the girls colored in the gate area. Flight was easy and the girls discovered they could play tic tac toe against each other on the screens in the seats. We made it ...

Lauterbrunnen and Mürren, updated

Lauren and I are reading books, Jeff's at the laundromat. Really good day today. 21,000 steps! We're pooped! Walked thru the Lauterbrunnen valley, so beautiful. Wonderful day for it, too. Then up a cable car to Murren. I will post more later, but my phone battery is low and I'm going to try to get Lo to sleep. Update:  Yesterday was awesome. Jeff said it was his favorite hike, I still think Mannlichen too Kleine Scheidegg is my fave, but this was a very close second.  Started with breakfast again. L ate more pancakes, I got a fried egg and a roll with Nutella. Yum! Ooh, and the coffee, so good.  Then a nap for L and we got packed for the day. Caught the noon train to Lauterbrunnen. It was our first time leaving the station there; we've changed trains there a ton, but never left the platform. Town was really nice, and we had a gorgeous sunny day. The first waterfall is just outside of the main drag and then we got on what a blog I read called "a ...

Mannlichen

So last night we went to an Italian steakhouse/ pizza place for dinner called Sina's. We kept Lauren entertained with several of those really long skinny hard breadsticks (Mom, remember when you used to buy those for us?) and then when our anti pasta plate arrived (ham, salami, cheese, pickles (they seem to love pickles here!) and really tasty) the waiter (I think he was the owner) looked right at her sitting in Jeff's lap, said "this is for you" and set it right in front of her...a split second later she had both hands smack in the middle of the plate. Pretty funny, wish I'd gotten a picture. Jeff had pizza for dinner, I had spaghetti alla carbonara (good, but not as good as yours, Mom). Lauren sat in our laps until our main course came and then sat pretty happily in her stroller next to me, as long as I kept putting pasta in her mouth! Dinner was really good, probably amplified by the fact it was only our second real meal of the trip and neither of us had lunch....
