2/18/20: ocean lover

Lauren has gotten braver by the day in the ocean. Today when we got outside she spent a long time over by the rocks looking for fish. “Grandma, why aren’t you over here looking at the fish?” “Mom, come look at this teeeeeeny fish!” We saw a few crabs. Heard and then saw a couple of parrots in the neighbor’s tree. Jeff and Lauren kayaked and Jeff said he saw a 4’ long fish swim under them. Lauren then went back to the beach and was digging in the water and filling up cups of “snacks” (water) to feed the fish. She kept turning down offers to swim in the pool. We did finally get her over there though and everyone swam before lunch. The girls napped well (Lauren had I think her first meltdown while we were putting her down for a nap, she’s been so good). Easton came this morning to clean the pool, I forgot to write about him last week. He comes on Tuesdays to clean the pool and Mom got his story last week. His son, Rasheed Brown, is going to college in Nashville and training for the Olym...

2/17/20: The Wreck. Again.

Today was Grandma and Papa’s introduction to The Wreck. We spent the morning on the beach, Abby liked splashing in the water and throwing sand. She did get mad when she stuck her salty, sandy fingers in her mouth to suck on! Lauren spent a long time near the rocks with Grandma looking at fish; she’s gotten pretty brave with her water shoes on!  We took Mike and Carol to lunch at The Wreck, but the weather was a bit of a downer... as we walked through the parking lot it started drizzling and by the time we made it a short way to the beach it was pouring! We ducked into the bar area and waited out the rain for about 10 minutes. During that time two different ladies came over to tell me how cute our baby boy (Abby) was. The second was very sweet, she said “oh, I have to show my sons!” And called her two teenaged boys over, they sweetly commented on how cute she was and her pretty blue eyes. The lady then said “don’t blink, momma” and pointed to her 6’ tall boys.  Lunch w...

2/16/20: pool floats

Lauren was up at 5:15 this morning 😳 Grandma and Papa slept in after their late arrival, so it was a long 3 hours of waiting. Then we walked Grandma out to the beach and showed her the crabs and shells. Lauren had a few people in the pool with her right after breakfast. After lunch the girls napped and Mike and Carol took their pool floats out on the bay ... they drifted over halfway across and then paddled back. Jeff made his pina coladas after that for our pool time. Lauren loved laying on the pool float and kicking on it with me. Abby’s scab came off her chin and it looks so much better! After a round of showers and baths, Jeff grilled burgers. The beef tasted different down here, but they really hit the spot! Abby had a late nap and was up late, Lauren had trouble falling asleep and then discovered a mosquito in her room and kept screaming! Jeff finally got it and all was quiet. I only took one picture all day!! Just didn’t have my phone on me, but what I lacked in quantity,...

2/15/20: airport and groceries

Nana and Papa left today :( We has a leisurely morning of coffee, beach, and packing. Jeff and Lauren swam briefly. We saw a really cool crab, body about the size of a deck of cards... kind of orange and blue. He had orange arm things that we waved around ... we were guessing to attract fish. Exchanging pictures we all took. Left the house around 10:30 and dropped them at the airport. Then we got gas (nearly $5 before the exchange rate!) and went to the grocery store. I wore Abby and Lauren rode in the cart. Now that I knew my way around the store I felt like it went pretty fast. Got fixings for a few dinners and lunches, and lots of pina coladas! Then headed home. Abs fell asleep in the car and I’m Lauren and I ate pretzels and made shapes out of them. Mike and Carol’s first flight was delayed and they missed their connection in Miami, so instead of arriving early afternoon they got in at 10pm. So after Lauren’s nap she woke up, looked at me and Jeff and said, “but... I’m just all a...

2/14/20: bioluminescent bay

Happy Valentines Day! I brought the girls matching heart PJs and Lauren some mini M&Ms. It’s also Mom and Dad’s last full day; we will miss them! Morning on the beach, one more trip to The Wreck for lunch, and afternoon by the pool. Starting to sound familiar?! Mom and I branched out at lunch and each tried something new ... me, the black bean burger Mom loves. And her, blackened mahi mahi on a salad. Luckily we were both happy with the change! Jeff cooked the remaining shrimp for dinner and we all had it on salad. Then it was Lauren’s turn to see the luminescent bay! Dad and I shared a kayak and Jeff took Lauren. We got over there and when Jeff got her to look at the paddles she exclaimed “look, it glows! Look, mom, daddy’s paddle glows! Look, Papa, Daddy’s paddle glows!” It really is cool, wish we would have gotten some pics, but didn’t want to bring our phones in the kayaks as we get pretty damp.

2/13/20: date night

We started the morning with sandcastles. Lauren and I found a sea snail crawling in the water, about the size of a nickel. Only his antenna? Feelers? Stuck out the front, we never saw the rest of him. We set up the tent we brought to give Abby some shade. It was about perfect, but the constant breeze here made it keep tipping on us. We bagged it up and put it with the other beach stuff under the house in case it serves someone else better.  We decided we needed another visit to The Wreck at Rum Point for lunch. Nana and Lauren walked up there (about 3/4 mile) ... Lauren said it was a very bumpy ride in the stroller! Nana got another black bean burger, Jeff and I got fish wraps again, and Lauren and Papa split fruit and fries. Jeff found a new favorite drink: Cayman Colada ... pina colada with raspberry liquor swirled in. Abby loves the fries and fruit too - holds on the the fruit for a pretty long time sucking on it.  More swimming in the afternoon. After baths, I put...

2/12/20: breakfast with a side of crab

Went to breakfast this morning at a place called Over the Edge. They opened at 8, we were there by 8:10 and were the first ones in the place. I had avocado toast with tomato and poached eggs, Lauren and Jeff had waffles with fruit and whipped cream, and Mom and Dad had omelettes. Food was good, it was one of those places where you stick to the chairs and the table. If we’re being generous, we’ll blame it on the open air building and salty sea air.  After breakfast we walked out onto their deck and saw a good size crab down below! He was after an empty butter container. More wild roosters around too. And out front they had a bunch of shoes stuck to a tree... we’re assuming they are shoes that have floated up on their shore.  Back at the house we saw a ton more of the itty bitty crabs along our shore, it’s crazy how small some of them are! My hand in the pic is for size reference. And so you can see my pretty island nails 😉 We wondered how the crabs size up to a new sh...
